The Municipality of Nyeri was chartered in August 2018 under the leadership of the Governor of Nyeri County, His Excellency DR. Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga. This chartering process marked an important step in the transformation of Nyeri Town into a fully-fledged municipality, with enhanced governance and administrative powers.
Pursuant to the Urban Areas and Cities Act, 2011(amended 2019) the Nyeri Municipal Board was established in February 2019 to manage and oversee the administrative, developmental, and infrastructural needs of Nyeri Town, the county’s administrative headquarter. As a municipal board, it plays a key role in the provision of essential services, urban planning, and promoting economic growth within the town and its environs.
Key Functions of Nyeri Municipal Board:
- Urban Planning and Development: The Board is responsible for ensuring orderly growth and development of Nyeri Town, including zoning, land use, and the approval of building plans. It also oversees the development of infrastructure such as roads, drainage systems, and public amenities.
- Provision of Basic Services: The Municipal Board is involved in ensuring the provision of basic urban services such as solid waste management and Municipal public transport
- Revenue Collection: As part of its mandate, the Board is responsible for collecting revenue from rates, permits, licenses, and other local taxes.
- Local Governance and Community Engagement: The Board plays a role in promoting good governance by ensuring that local communities have a say in the development process through consultations, forums, and participatory approaches.
- Economic Development: In addition to its administrative roles, the Nyeri Municipal Board works to foster local economic development. This includes facilitating business growth, promoting tourism (as Nyeri is a key area in Central Kenya known for its historical sites and natural beauty), and supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
- Environmental Conservation: Given its role in urban management, the Board is also involved in efforts to conserve the environment through waste management programs, tree planting initiatives, Streetscaping and town beautification.
Like many local government entities, the Nyeri Municipal Board faces challenges such as congestion in urban areas, rapid urbanization, and pressure on infrastructure and public services. However, it continues to work towards addressing these issues and improving the quality of life for residents.
