Vaccination Against Lumpy Skin Disease(LSD) and Rabies Announcement

Due to an outbreak of LSD in Mathira a vaccination excercise which takes place every year has kicked off and is expected to run until 17th October, 2018. From there, the same will be done in the other Sub-counties.
LSD is an infectious disease that affects both dairy and beef cattle. It is a viral infection characterized by the appearance of nodules on the skin and other parts of the body.
The incubation period (the period between exposure to an infection and the appearance of the first symptoms) of LSD is 4-14 days and the first signs being fever accompanied by depression, salivation, nasal and eye discharge. It is then that the nodules start forming on the skin of the animal and are common especially on the head, neck, limbs, genitalia and under the tail. In severe cases, the nodules form in the mouth, nose and other internal organs.
A farmer can easily identify the nodules since they appear like a firm, creamy grey or yellow mass of tissue. Although the skin may eventually heal, it is left with permanent scars hence damaging the hides and skin. The disease can also cause mastitis, infertility in bulls and emaciation.
This disease has no cure and therefore, it is important that farmers avail their cattle for the preventative vaccine
