There were celebrations in Mathira East Sub County as Nyeri Governor H.E. Mutahi Kahiga and Deputy Governor H.E. Caroline Karugu accompanied H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta while he officially opened the new modern Karatina Market Hub on 1st November 2018.
This is the second largest regional trading hub for wholesale and retail in East Africa, after Kongowea market in Mombasa County.
Over 2,000 traders are set to move into the three – storey market in the next two weeks and start their businesses.
The market has since been handed to the County Government of Nyeri which will facilitate in settling of traders.
The project will help to expand marketing of farm produce in the county.
The President also promised that the ongoing Chaka market in Kieni East Sub County will be completed in the next seven months.
