The National Government under the leadership of H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta has selected Nyeri County to be the pilot county concerning coffee matters. The county is therefore set to benefit as the National Government moves to take up the program which is aimed to revive the coffee sector countrywide. Nyeri County is the only county selected out of the 31 coffee- growing- counties in the country.
Nyeri Governor H.E. Mutahi Kahiga on 27th August said a team from the National Government will visit all the 27 coffee Cooperative Societies in the county on the 5th week of August 2018 to establish various issues affecting coffee farmers before handing over their report to the Head of State. The team is expected to establish how many society members are there, how many coffee trees, what are the needs of the coffee factories and how much farm inputs such as fertilizer are needed? The benefits include each farmer receiving free farm inputs from National Government during the period of the program. In addition, each coffee factory will receive free digital weighing machine.
This comes few months after the county was selected to be a pilot County on matters of health through Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Recently, the International Coffee Organization team (ICO) led by Executive Director Jose Sette met with Nyeri Governor H.E Mutahi Kahiga to discuss issues pertaining coffee. The Chairman of the Coffee Sub-Sector Reforms Implementation Committee in the Office of the President ,Prof. Joseph Kieyah was also in that meeting.
The Governor was speaking at Kamukunji Stadium, Nyeri town during the Living Faith Ministries Conference that ended on 26th August 2018.
