Several roads in Nyeri and Karatina towns have been improved after County Government of Nyeri received Sh 132 Million from the Kenya Roads Board.
Already Kianda road in Nyeri Town has been partially tarmacked, Kuku Lane has been rehabilitated using cabro tiles while re-carpeting process of Gakere road has already kicked off.
Other roads in Karatina town are being improved. Plans are underway to also improve roads in Mukurwe-ini town using the same funds.
The grant from Kenya Roads Board is given to counties by the board after fuel levy. For every litre of fuel, KRB gains Sh 18 per litre. The funds from the board will go into maintenance of 84 kilometers of roads from year 2017 to 2020.
Kenya Roads Board is a body mandated to oversee the road network in Kenya and coordinate the maintenance, rehabilitation and development of roads.
Kenya Roads Board officials led by Chairperson Rita Kavashe paid a courtesy call to Nyeri Governor H.E. Mutahi Kahiga in his office on where the Chairperson lauded the County Government of Nyeri for the good engagement with the board.
The team later toured the roads in Nyeri town since they have a responsibility to inspect the work which has been done on the ground after releasing the funds.
The Governor who was joined by Nyeri Deputy Governor Dr. Caroline Karugu, Transport and Infrastructure CEC Muthui Kariuki among others said the money will greatly improve the transport sector in the county.
He expressed his commitment in fighting corruption and underscored the importance of effective service delivery from contractors given work to rehabilitate various roads for the Nyeri citizens to get value for their money.
Lands CEC Dr Kwai Wanjaria, Water CEC Fredrick Kinyua, Finance CEC Robert Thuo and County Secretary Ben Gachichio were also present.
