A celebratory mood was palpable in Nyeri today as the first inaugural passenger commercial flight touched down at Nyeri’s Nyaribo Airstrip.
The 11 seater- Bush Air Safaris plane which touched down at 11.48 am on  Saturday, 06th October 2018 opened way to the flights from Nyeri to Nairobi and vice versa.
Passengers will now be taking only 25 minutes to Wilson Airport, Nairobi instead of the three hour road drive.
For many years, the idle Airstrip was being used by local farmers for drying maize and grazing cows and goats.
ICT CS Joe Mucheru, Nyeri Governor H.E. Mutahi Kahiga, Nyeri Deputy Governor H.E. Caroline Karugu and Nyeri Town MP Hon Ngunjiri Wambugu among others were the first to board the flight and expressed the efficiency of this mode of transport.
The daily flights will start immediately with a one way ticket costing Sh 3,000.
The Governor lauded the national government under the leadership of H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta for realising this dream saying it is a major milestone for Nyeri County.
The launch of these flights will boost trade and tourism.
It will also boost local economy in the county.
Those who were in the maiden flight expressed their excitement for the safe flight saying it will be a fantastic trip for tourists.
The roads within Nyaribo Airstrip have so far been tarmacked and street lights installed.
